What is metal plating?

Metal plating is a finishing process which refers to the deposition of metal onto a conductive surface, with electroplating being a leading method of achieving this.
Metal plating increases surface thickness, improves corrosion and wear resistance, and reduces friction, amongst other things.

How does metal plating work?

Metal plating is most commonly achieved through electroplating. Electroplating works through electrolysis - charging an anode and cathode with an electrical charge in a chemical bath, which causes the negatively charged ions to move to the anode, and positively charged ions to move to the cathode. 
When the desired metal plating material is used as the anode, and the part to be plated used as the cathode, electrolysis transfers the desired coating material to the metal part.
